Why Choose the PADI IDC at Oceans 5 Gili Air?
The popularity of the PADI IDC at Oceans 5 Gili Air has grown significantly over the years, and for good reason. Unlike many other PADI IDCs that rigidly adhere to a fixed schedule, the program at Oceans 5 takes a more personalized and realistic approach to instructor training. Under the expert guidance of PADI Course Director Sander Buis, candidates receive flexible and tailored instruction designed to enhance their individual strengths while addressing their weaknesses.
At Oceans 5 Gili Air, the goal is not just to pass the Instructor Examination (IE); it is to produce competent, confident, and responsible dive instructors who can excel in real-world teaching scenarios. Sander ensures that every candidate understands the PADI Standards and knows how to apply them effectively in different teaching environments. By focusing on realistic teaching methods, the IDC at Oceans 5 prepares candidates to succeed as instructors, not just to get through the exam.
What Makes This PADI IDC Unique?
Personalized Approach – Every instructor candidate has different strengths and weaknesses. Some might struggle with public speaking, while others may need more time mastering skill demonstrations. Sander tailors the IDC to accommodate each candidate’s learning style and needs.
Realistic Teaching Methods – Unlike many PADI IDCs that focus primarily on helping candidates pass the IE, the program at Oceans 5 ensures that candidates fully understand PADI Standards and teaching methodologies. This prepares them for actual work as instructors.
Flexible Training – While the PADI IDC follows the required curriculum, Sander adapts the schedule and approach to optimize the learning experience. No two IDCs at Oceans 5 Gili Air are ever exactly the same.
Environmental Awareness – Becoming a PADI Instructor isn’t just about teaching people how to dive. At Oceans 5, candidates learn to be responsible dive professionals who respect the marine environment and contribute to conservation efforts.
Small Groups for Better Learning – The IDC at Oceans 5 Gili Air maintains a limited number of candidates per session, ensuring personal attention from Sander and the staff. This fosters a family-like learning environment where candidates can build strong bonds with their fellow students and mentors.
A 20-Day Journey to Becoming a Dive Instructor
The PADI IDC at Oceans 5 Gili Air spans 20 days and is designed to fully prepare candidates for the challenges of working as a professional dive instructor. Throughout the course, Sander and his team guide candidates through essential aspects of instructor development, including:
Dive Theory and PADI Standards – Understanding dive physics, physiology, equipment, environment, and PADI Standards is crucial to becoming a professional instructor.
Teaching Techniques – Candidates learn how to conduct confined and open water training sessions, deliver engaging classroom presentations, and evaluate student performance effectively.
Skill Development and Demonstration – Candidates refine their demonstration skills to ensure they can teach students efficiently and clearly.
Rescue and Problem-Solving Scenarios – The IDC includes extensive training in handling real-world emergency scenarios to ensure instructors are prepared for any situation.
Workshops and Practical Application – Candidates participate in various workshops focusing on aspects like Discover Scuba Diving, Open Water Diver courses, and other PADI programs.

Beyond the Examination: Becoming a Confident Instructor
One of the defining features of Sander’s IDC is his commitment to creating dive professionals who can work confidently anywhere in the world. Many IDC programs focus solely on helping candidates pass the PADI Instructor Examination, but at Oceans 5 Gili Air, the focus is on understanding the why behind PADI Standards and methodologies.
Sander believes that a great instructor is not someone who memorizes answers for an exam but someone who knows how to teach effectively, make decisions based on safety and standards, and inspire new divers to explore the underwater world responsibly. This philosophy has made Oceans 5’s PADI IDC one of the most sought-after programs in the Gili Islands and beyond.
The Ideal IDC Candidate
The PADI IDC at Oceans 5 Gili Air is open to Divemasters who are ready to take the next step in their diving careers. Whether you have been a Divemaster for years or have recently completed your training, this course will provide you with the skills and confidence to teach diving professionally. If you are passionate about the ocean, eager to develop your skills, and want to be part of a top-quality dive training program, this IDC is for you.
What Happens After the IDC?
Once candidates successfully complete the PADI IDC, they will participate in the PADI Instructor Examination (IE). If there are four or more IDC candidates, the exam will take place on Gili Air, offering a familiar and comfortable environment. Otherwise, the IE will be conducted on nearby Gili Trawangan, with Oceans 5 arranging all necessary logistics.
After passing the IE, newly certified instructors have various opportunities to continue their professional development:
