Beach Clean Up Gili Islands | Conservation Dive Centre | Oceans 5 Gili Air |
Last Friday, our divemaster candidates once again led the way in organizing a beach cleanup in the harbor of Gili Air. These weekly cleanups have become an important tradition for Oceans 5 Gili Air, and during high season they are more essential than ever. With many tourists waiting for boats in the harbor, rubbish often gets left behind and eventually finds its way either onto the beaches or into the ocean surrounding the Gili Islands. Since the harbor is the first impression travelers get when they arrive on Gili Air, keeping it clean is vital for both the local community and the environment.
Bags Filled with Rubbish
This cleanup was no exception—our candidates returned with bags full of waste. Plastic bottles, glass bottles, ropes, packaging materials, and countless other discarded items were collected and brought back to Oceans 5, where everything was weighed. The sight of overflowing bags was both disheartening and motivating. On one hand, it highlighted just how much rubbish ends up in the harbor area. On the other, it showed the effectiveness of our weekly efforts in removing this waste before it can harm marine life or wash out to sea.
Why High Season Cleanups Matter
High season means more tourists, more boats, and unfortunately, more rubbish. Without organized cleanups, much of this waste would remain scattered along the harbor front, giving visitors a poor impression of the island while damaging the environment. By stepping in each Friday, our team helps ensure that both locals and visitors can enjoy a cleaner, safer, and more welcoming Gili Air.
Open to Everyone
One of the things that makes these cleanups so special is that they are open to everyone. You don’t need to be a diver, and you don’t need to be connected to Oceans 5. Tourists, locals, families, and even children are welcome to join. It’s free to participate, and as a thank-you, all volunteers are invited back to Oceans 5 for a free drink afterwards. It’s a great way to give back to the island while also meeting new people in a fun and meaningful way.
How You Can Support
At Oceans 5 Gili Air, conservation is part of our core philosophy. Since 2010, we have been committed to protecting the environment in and around the Gili Islands through weekly beach and reef cleanups, educational workshops, and partnerships with local universities. Unlike many other organizations, we do not accept donations, grants, or outside financial support. The only way we can continue these conservation projects is through divers and travelers choosing to dive and stay with us.
By joining a course, fun dive, or even just staying in our resort, you directly support our mission to protect the environment, reduce marine pollution, and give back to the local community.
✨ Join us this Friday at 5:00 PM for the next beach cleanup. Everyone is welcome—together, we can make a difference for Gili Air and its marine environment.
