Professional Training, Not Free Labor — and That Makes All the Difference

For many divers, becoming a Divemaster is the moment when diving changes from a hobby into a possible career. It is the first professional level in recreational diving and the step where you move from being guided to becoming responsible for others in the water. Choosing where and how you do your Divemaster Internship is therefore one of the most important decisions in your dive career.

At Oceans 5 Gili Air, we do not offer free Divemaster internships. Instead, we offer paid, professional SSI Divemaster Internships that focus on education, real skills, conservation awareness, and personal development — not on replacing staff with cheap or unpaid labor.

And there are very clear reasons for that.

Why Oceans 5 Does Not Offer Free Divemaster Internships

In many tropical destinations, “free internships” sound attractive. You work for the dive shop, help on courses, carry tanks, clean equipment, and in exchange you receive training. On paper it looks like a good deal. In reality, it often creates problems — for the intern, for the instructors, and for the local community.

At Oceans 5 Gili Air, we strongly believe that:

✅ Training Should Never Replace Paid Jobs

We do not use interns to replace local staff.
We do not use interns to fill gaps in the schedule.
And we do not build our business model on unpaid or underpaid labor.

Gili Air has a strong local diving community, and many families depend on tourism and dive operations for their income. Offering free internships that replace paid positions undercuts the local economy and makes it harder for local divemasters and instructors to earn a fair living.

That is not something we are willing to be part of.

✅ Our Instructors Are Paid Fair — So They Can Focus on Teaching

Because Oceans 5 does not depend on free labor, our instructors and divemasters are paid properly. That means:

  • They are motivated to teach

  • They have time for students and interns

  • They are not rushed or overloaded

  • They stick to training standards instead of cutting corners

At Oceans 5, teaching is not something we squeeze in between other duties. Teaching is the main job.

And that directly benefits Divemaster Interns, because you are learning from instructors who are focused on training quality, not just daily logistics.

✅ You Are a Student — Not a Worker

During your Divemaster Internship at Oceans 5, you are not expected to:

  • Clean toilets

  • Paint boats

  • Do night shifts

  • Act as free shop staff

Of course, you will learn how a dive center operates — filling tanks, organizing equipment, preparing boats, assisting on courses — but always as part of training, not as free labor.

Your role is to learn how to become a professional Divemaster, not to work like one before you are trained and certified.

Strictly Following SSI Standards — No Cutting Corners

Since January 2026, Oceans 5 Gili Air is an SSI Instructor Training Center, and all professional programs follow SSI training standards strictly.

This is important, because Divemaster training is not about rushing through skills to get a certification card. It is about building:

  • Watermanship

  • Rescue skills

  • Leadership abilities

  • Environmental awareness

  • Professional attitude

At Oceans 5, skills are repeated until they are solid — not until they are “just good enough to pass.”

We strongly believe that a Divemaster who is trained properly:

  • Is safer for guests

  • Is more confident in difficult situations

  • Becomes a better instructor candidate later

Our goal is not just to certify Divemasters.
Our goal is to develop future instructors and dive professionals.

What Makes the Oceans 5 Divemaster Internship Different?

The SSI Divemaster Internship at Oceans 5 Gili Air usually takes 6 to 8 weeks, depending on experience, weather conditions, and personal progress. But what really makes it different is not the duration — it is the content and philosophy.

In addition to the SSI curriculum, Oceans 5 integrates many extra workshops and real-world training elements, including:

🔹 Rescue Workshops

Not just ticking off rescue skills, but understanding:

  • Stress recognition

  • Panic management

  • Accident prevention

  • Emergency procedures

Many divers did their Rescue Course years ago. We refresh and deepen these skills so that Divemaster candidates become truly confident, not just certified.

🔹 Skills Circuit Workshops

You will practice:

  • Demonstration-quality skills

  • Neutral buoyancy skills

  • Equipment handling

  • Problem-solving underwater

Because later, as a Divemaster, you are not only guiding — you are also assisting instructors and supervising certified divers.

🔹 Navigation, Knots & Lift Bag Workshops

Professional diving requires practical skills, such as:

  • Compass navigation

  • Search patterns

  • Knot tying

  • Surface marker buoy deployment

  • Lift bag techniques

These are things many recreational divers rarely practice — but for professionals, they are essential.

🔹 How to Guide Workshops

Guiding is not just swimming in front of a group. You will learn:

  • How to brief dive sites properly

  • How to manage different experience levels

  • How to read air consumption

  • How to position yourself in the group

  • How to react when things go wrong

Good guiding is a skill — and we train it seriously.

🔹 Conservation Activities Integrated in Training

Oceans 5 has been organizing:

  • Weekly beach cleanups since 2010

  • Reef cleanups

  • Conservation workshops

  • Research partnerships with Indonesian universities

Divemaster Interns take part in:

  • Leading cleanups

  • Educating guests

  • Understanding local environmental challenges

We believe every dive professional should also be an environmental ambassador.

Gili Air is very different from large, busy dive destinations. And that is exactly why it is such a good place to learn.

There are no cars, no traffic, and no city stress. Life on Gili Air moves at a slower pace, which allows Divemaster candidates to:

  • Rest properly

  • Recover between training days

  • Focus on learning

When your mind is relaxed, learning becomes easier and more effective.

🌊 Ideal Diving Conditions for Training

Most dive sites around the Gili Islands are:

  • Shallow to medium depth

  • Calm and protected

  • Close to shore

  • Full of marine life

This makes them perfect for:

  • Skill training

  • Rescue scenarios

  • Guiding practice

And because sites are close, you spend less time traveling and more time training.

🐢 Amazing Marine Life Without Long Boat Rides

Turtles, reef sharks, stingrays, and healthy reefs are found directly around the islands. You do not need long speedboat trips to experience great diving — which again allows more time for training and workshops.
